Director, Government Health and Safety Lead

After three years in the role our Director, Tina Paterson is leaving her position to take an extended period of leave from MPI. 

The position is a tier 3 role employed by the Ministry for Primary Industries but serving the wider public service as a functional lead for health and safety. Information about the role and purpose of the Government Health and Safety Lead (GHSL) can be found here.  The Director reports to Deputy Director General, MPI and supports the Director General, Ray Smith, in his role as the public service functional lead for Health and Safety.  

The role involves wide engagement across 39 member agencies, as well as various stakeholders and industry H&S groups. The Director provides strategic direction, leadership and operational management of the GHSL function and leads a small team of four specialist staff.  The role requires someone with a cooperative and collaborative work style and strong relationship building and management skills.  A technical health and safety background isn’t necessary, although some operational health and safety leadership experience and an understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act, 2015 would be required.

The role would provide the successful candidate with an opportunity to develop broad networks across the sector, work at a senior leadership level and to experience system leadership.
