Join our award-winning Summer Internship programme and get to be placed within one of our fourteen government agencies offering placements. See first-hand what it is like to work in a health, safety, and wellbeing team in the public sector.

Our programme offers students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and exposure to the exciting field of health, safety, and wellbeing during their placement.

About the programme

If successful you will be placed in one of our agencies health, safety, and wellbeing team where you will gain valuable business experience and be responsible for delivering your own project work and contribute to the team’s overall work programme.

  • The summer intern programme runs from 21 November 2022 to the 17 February 2023.
  • We have 14 agency placements on offer; 11 based in Wellington and 3 based in Auckland (See our programme guide for more information [PDF, 2.8 MB]).
  • Employed on a fixed term contract by one of our agencies.
  • Working full time (40 hours a week Monday to Friday), for up to 14 weeks.

Who are we looking for?

We don’t expect our interns to have any prior health and safety knowledge or experience but relevant study and an interest in this field is a plus. Interns must be:

  • Genuinely interested in starting a career in Health, Safety and Wellbeing Profession.
  • Having great work ethic and communication skills.
  • Studying in New Zealand for a diploma or undergraduate degree in health science, health and safety, global health, psychology, or human resources.
  • Moving into your fourth year or finishing of your final of undergraduate study. We want to have students who have studied or completed one more paper in health, health science, occupational health and safety, human resources, psychology, or a related area of study.
  • Available to work full time for the duration of your placement from 21 November to 17 February 2023 (excluding the Christmas/new year holidays)
  • Eligible to live, study and work in New Zealand.

Applying for our internship 

Our selection process has been designed to help identify the key attributes and skills, agencies are looking to be a successful health, safety and wellbeing intern for this programme and be a part of their team. 

To apply for our intern programme, we ask all our intern candidates to:

  1. Visit the MPI Careers portal(external link) and apply by creating your account profile
  2. Complete your application form, upload your CV, cover letter to tell us what your three preferred agencies are (from reading our recruitment guide) and your Academic transcript
  3. Complete a self-taped video interview and attend an assessment centre to interview with our agencies
  4. Complete pre-employment checks such as references and vetting checks (if required by your agency)
