GHSL Welcomes our 2020/21 Summer Interns

Intern and H&S Officer doing the Hongi

Welcoming our interns with a Pōwhiri.

This week the Government Health and Safety Lead team formally welcomed the 2020/21 Government Health and Safety Interns who have started their three-month internships across a range of government agencies with a Pōwhiri at MPI. This is the fourth year of the intern programme.

The aim of the Health and Safety Summer Intern programme is to build a pipeline of future health and safety professionals across the public sector.  As the demand for health and safety professionals in New Zealand is high, with an estimated shortage of 2,100 health and safety professionals across the next 10 years.

The programme provides interns (3rd and 4th year undergraduates) the opportunity to work in health and safety teams, complete their own programme of work, attend workshops and visit different sites/agencies. These visits are designed to showcase our agencies diverse working environments and broad range of health and safety risks that public servants operate in on a daily basis.  This year interns will attend 11 cohort events which include field trips to Parliament, WorkSafe,  FENZ Avalon Station and the National Learning Centre.

A big thanks to MSD, MFAT, NZ Defence, NZ Customs, DIA, Education and MPI who are employing our H&S interns this year.
