The Health and Safety Generalist Job Family

The career pathway for an H&S Generalist is rarely linear. Progression is influenced by a range of factors, including an individual’s experience, skills, and attributes; the size, type, and maturity of the organisation they work in; and the sector they are part of, or aspire to move into.

The H&S Generalist pathway is made up of four broad groups of roles: Getting Started, Advisory, Senior, and Lead (illustrated in the wheel diagram).

Rather than focusing solely on job titles, consider the value you can contribute in each role, as well as the development and opportunities each role can offer you. Remember that role expectations, the breadth of the role (or any limitations), and who your stakeholders may be, will vary based on what sector you work in and where your role sits within the organisation.
