Public service recognised at Health and Safety Awards
The Government Health and Safety Lead and the Department of Corrections were both winners at the Safeguard New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards on Tuesday 28 May.
The Government Health and Safety Lead (GHSL) took out the ACC Best Leadership of an Industry Sector or Region award for their work across the state sector. The award recognised the GHSL has helped to increase collaboration between it's member agencies, and provides support and development for the state sector health, safety and wellbeing workforce through workshops, forums, conferences, targeted case studies and best practice guidance, as well as it's specialised Health and Safety Summer Intern Programme.

The Department of Corrections was awarded the Simpson Grierson Best Board Level Engagement in Health and Safety. The department has created it's own Officer Development and Assurance Programme for it's executives, consisting of six core elements they must engage in. This includes a comprehensive induction for all new Officers, mandatory operational site visits, 16 hours of other development activities in health, safety and wellbeing and development briefings that often include outside experts.
Over 150 entries were received for this year's awards. The New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards are organised by Thomson Reuters and sponsored by WorkSafe New Zealand. They celebrate the best of New Zealand health, safety and wellbeing.
